The Round Table: Voices in Your Head

The Round Table: Voices in Your Head

In our last Round Table discussion, I asked if you imagined famous people as book characters while reading. This time I’m curious about accents. I have a confession…let’s say I’m reading a historical fiction based in Victorian England, I don’t hear a British voice as I read. Nope. The characters may be 100% British in print, but in my head they sound like normal Americans. Even if I read a book set in Scotland it’s rare that I can hear a Scottish accent as I read and that makes me sad because I lived in Scotland for a over a year! One would think I would easily slip into accent as I read, but it doesn’t happen. Even if an author writes words where you can clearly hear the Scottish… Read more »

Cover Reveal: Amy Maurer Jones’s A Zebra Like Me + Excerpt

Thanks so much, Jess for hosting me today. I’m excited to announce that I have a new YA book coming out this winter! It’s a stand alone YA contemporary entitled, A Zebra Like Me. It’s my first stab at contemporary and the subject matter hits close to home so I am more than a little nervous about it. The cover art is by Kelsey Keeton of KKeeton Designs and it is gorgeous but you don’t have to take my word for it, see for yourself! Here’s the blurb on the back of the cover. Maybelle Dawson longs for normalcy and belonging. Often misunderstood, she struggles with a rare disorder, labeling her a Medical Zebra. Maybelle’s happiness and well-being threaten to slip through her fingers as she battles to take control… Read more »

Excerpt: Megan Frampton’s What not to Bare

Excerpt: Megan Frampton’s What not to Bare

Megan Frampton’s upcoming Loveswept release is set to be released in October 14, 2013 and I have excerpt from the first chapter). I just finished this last Friday and really enjoyed it! Synopsis: Lady Charlotte Jepstow certainly knows how to make an impression—a terrible one. Each one of her ball gowns is more ostentatiously ugly than the one before. Even she has been forced to wonder: Is she unmarried because of her abysmal wardrobe, or does she wear clashing clothing because she doesn’t want to be pursued in the first place? But when Charlotte meets Lord David Marchston, suddenly a little courtship doesn’t sound so bad after all. David will be the first to admit he’s made some mistakes. But when he gets yanked from his post by his superiors,… Read more »

One Liners: Deanna Raybourn’s Silent in the Grave

One Liners: Deanna Raybourn’s Silent in the Grave

One Liners is a weekly feature where we look at a novel’s first line as if it were a pick up line. We’ve all heard the saying, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” The first line in a book is equally important as the last since it sets the tone and often will either make an impression or not. Let’s face it, it’s a little like dating. Will that guy with the cheesy pick up line score a number or not? So, I began to think…if the first line in a book was a pick up line, would you give it your number, agree to a date, let it buy you a drink, or do you walk away? The first book to be featured is… Read more »

Film Friday: Lady Chatterley

Have you ever been surprised to find out a film was based on a book? Film Friday is a weekly feature that spotlights films that were adapted from books. Earlier this week it was DH Lawrence’s birthday and what better way to honor the memory of a great British author, than to feature his novel Lady Chatterley’s Lover. Constance, Lady Chatterley, is an upper-class woman and married. Her husband, Clifford, is very handsome, but has been paralyzed from the waist down due to a war injury. Due to his injury he refuses any physical contact and becomes emotional neglectful of Constance forcing a distance between them. Her sexual frustration leads her into the arms with the gamekeeper, Oliver Mellors, where they embark on a passionate affair. There are several adaptations,… Read more »

Book Review: Sherry Thomas’ The Burning Sky

Book Review: Sherry Thomas’ The Burning Sky

I’m a big fan of Sherry Thomas’ historical romances and when I heard she wrote a YA fantasy novel, The Burning Sky, I wasn’t sure what to think other than express concern that may she be walking away from historicals. Then I read the synopsis and couldn’t wait to read it! It was everything I had hoped it would be and so much more! Prophecy states that a great elemental mage will one day save the realm from Bane, a powerful mage. Iolanthe Seabourn has heard the stories and when she’s told she’s the one prophesied, she’s not sure what to believe. It’s Prince Titus of Elberon who comes to her rescue when her attempt to fix a batch of elixir goes wrong when she summons lightning. Titus knows the… Read more »
