Book Review: Tanya Davis and Andrea Dorfman’s How to Be Alone

Book Review: Tanya Davis and Andrea Dorfman’s How to Be Alone

I’m finding it difficult to review this wonderful little gem of a book, but here goes. Based on the YouTube video, Tanya Davis and Andrea Dorfman’s How to be Alone is a perfect companion to the video as well as an inspiring guidebook for anyone. If you’ve seen the video you know it’s profound and makes you comfortable with being by yourself. In the book, they’ve extended parts of Davis’ How to Be Alone to be more solitary. In a way, the single images illustrated by Dorfman lets you take a moment to take in Davis’ message. You can spend your time reflecting what she’s trying to convey and gives you the ability to envision how you can apply it to your life. The illustrations are vivid and powerful. What… Read more »

Operation Bed Post: Gabriel Emerson

I’ve decided to declassify a few files and introduce a bi-monthly feature at Lit, etc: Operation Bed Post! We’ve all come across that fictional character and walked away with our hearts forever imprinted with their name. This is a fun way to highlight the ones that have um earned a notch on my bedpost. 😉 Everyone knows I have way too many fictional boyfriends and I’ve decided to introduce them to you and yes share them too (grumbles). To kick off Operation Bed Post, I am declassifying the first dossier and it’s none other than Professor Emerson! The Professor Name: Gabriel Owen Emerson Research interest: Dante University: The University of Toronto Department: Italian Studies Introduced by: Sylvain Reynard Gabriel Emerson for me is an obvious choice because he’s distinctive. Blog Tour: Review- Katharina Hagena’s The Taste of Apple Seeds + Giveaway

Blog Tour: Review- Katharina Hagena’s The Taste of Apple Seeds + Giveaway

Originally published in German, Katharina Hagena’s The Taste of Apple of Seeds is a beautiful coming of age story where the secrets of the past are revealed and one woman grapples with what could have been. As for characterization, Hagena does a great job introducing us to a wide array of characters who play a vital role. Our primary character is Iris and she inherits a house she doesn’t want. Iris is very quiet and innocent. During her childhood flashbacks, we get to experience her naivety and her attempt to seem worldly to her friends. I liked getting to know Iris and hated the position she was put in. We then have Max who Iris calls the wimp and he’s a bit withdrawn, but as the story progresses we get… Read more »
