Book Review: Kate Meader’s Hot and Bothered

Book Review: Kate Meader’s Hot and Bothered

Kate Meader quickly became a new favorite author after reading the second book in her Hot in the Kitchen series, All Fired Up. When the opportunity came to review the third in the series, Hot and Bothered, I couldn’t pass up the chance. I wanted to see Jules get her happily ever after and oh boy did Meader deliver! We have good character development. Jules Kilroy is a single mother who is struggling with a secret: she’s dyslexic. She’s not very confident, but she has a heart of gold. Jules wants to live her own life and one way to do it, is on her own terms. So she moves out of her brother’s house and she’s ready to start dating. Then we have Tad DeLuca, who’s one of the… Read more »

Book Review: Rachel Van Dyken’s The Wager

Book Review: Rachel Van Dyken’s The Wager

I’ve had my eye on Rachel Van Dyken for a while and when the opportunity came to review The Wager, I couldn’t pass up the chance. Unfortunately, it’s a forgettable book and definitely left me with no desire to read anymore of her books. Ultimately it comes down to her writing and unbelievable characters and situations. 1. The characters are put into some ridiculous situations. For example, Jake and Char are on the same flight and to teach Jake a lesson (after breaking her heart), she initiates a fight that requires the intervention of an air marshal who uses peanuts to subdue Jake. But here’s the kicker-turns out Jake’s allergic to peanuts and you can very well imagine what happens next. 2. In order for Jake and Char to realize… Read more »

Book Review: Susan Elizabeth Phillips’ Heroes Are My Weakness

Book Review: Susan Elizabeth Phillips’ Heroes Are My Weakness

Susan Elizabeth Phillips’ is one of those authors I’ve always want to read, but never have because I didn’t know where to start. When I received a copy of Heroes Are My Weakness, I knew this was my opportunity! I’m glad I took the plunge because I liked it and at one point took a picture of a scene and sent a text to my sister with the words, “hubba hubba.” If you’re wondering, it was the scene in which our hero, Theo, is dressed as a Regency dandy. We have good character development. Annie Hewitt is forced to spend two months out of the year at Moonraker Cottage on Peregrine Island due to a contract made by her mother and her mother’s then ex-husband. Annie doesn’t like the area… Read more »

Book Review: Phoebe Fox’s The Breakup Doctor

Book Review: Phoebe Fox’s The Breakup Doctor

Move over Carrie Bradshaw, there’s a new expert on relationships and it’s Brook Odgen, aka The Breakup Doctor. As for character development, it’s a bit weak. We get to know our main character, Brook very well. Immediately we’re informed about her job situation and the status of her love life. She’s a bit quirky in the sense that she tries not to make certain situations about her, but in the end somehow manages to do so (more about this later). In many ways, I can see Brook taking on her mother’s sense of being dramatic (her mother is an actress) without realizing it. Then there’s Sasha, Brook’s best friend since childhood. We don’t get to know Sasha very well and what do know about her is solely from Brook. We… Read more »
