One Liners is a weekly feature where we look at a novel’s first line as if it were a pick up line. We’ve all heard the saying, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” The first line in a book is equally important as the last since it sets the tone and often will either make an impression or not. Let’s face it, it’s a little like dating. Will that guy with the cheesy pick up line score a number or not? So, I began to think…if the first line in a book was a pick up line, would you give it your number, agree to a date, let it buy you a drink, or do you walk away?
Today’s book is Veronica Roth’s Divergent and it’s the first book in the Divergent series.

Without reading the synopsis or anything else, what’s the verdict? Are you intrigued or walk away? Maybe flirt a little to see where it goes?

Oh what a cute idea! I’ve read some really great opening lines that hooked me right away. And then some so cheesy they get a ‘dude, really?” lol This one has me curious. Definitely want to know why only the one and why that’s so important.

I loooove opening lines more than the final line. They can say so much about a book or a series.

What a fun idea. I think I’d be interested to see why someone would confess that – at least it’s not a very vain person.
