One Liners is a weekly feature where we look at a novel’s first line as if it were a pick up line. We’ve all heard the saying, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” The first line in a book is equally important as the last since it sets the tone and often will either make an impression or not. Let’s face it, it’s a little like dating. Will that guy with the cheesy pick up line score a number or not? So, I began to think…if the first line in a book was a pick up line, would you give it your number, agree to a date, let it buy you a drink, or do you walk away?
Today’s book is Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 and if you haven’t read it, you should!

Without reading the synopsis or anything else, what’s the verdict? Are you intrigued or walk away? Maybe flirt a little to see where it goes?

I JUST read this book last week so I’m totally biased, but trying to separate myself from the book and just read this one-liner makes me think this person is calmly a little bit crazy. 🙂

I thought about this long and hard and trying to decide if I hadn’t read the book, what would I think. I agree with you!

Oh wow. That’s a really good first line. I think it would be something one would want to continue. I haven’t read this book, and I’ve been hearing that it’s really good. I might check it out some day.

If you like dystopians, this is one book to read. Overall, it’s just really interesting how the author viewed the transition of radio to television and how that could be a threat to books and society.

It makes you curious.
