One Liners is a weekly feature where we look at a novel’s first line as if it were a pick up line. We’ve all heard the saying, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” The first line in a book is equally important as the last since it sets the tone and often will either make an impression or not. Let’s face it, it’s a little like dating. Will that guy with the cheesy pick up line score a number or not? So, I began to think…if the first line in a book was a pick up line, would you give it your number, agree to a date, let it buy you a drink, or do you walk away?
Today’s book is J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. It’s been several years since I read it and I really enjoyed it.

Without reading the synopsis or anything else, what’s the verdict? Are you intrigued or walk away? Maybe flirt a little to see where it goes?

I’ve already read this and loved it, but if I hadn’t I’d definitely let buy me a drink. It’s an interesting line but I’m not totally convinced.

I already read this, and I already knew about it before I read it so I’m not sure I can form an opinion with just that one line. I pretty much knew that I would read the whole thing. 😛

Oh yes yes. I’ve just discovered this feed and I find it fascinating. I love the first line for the hobbit, because upon reading it I must ask, what is a hobbit? And read more.
