Synopsis: Six months after Lanie Jacobs’ husband’s death, it’s hard to imagine anything could deepen her sense of pain and loss. But then Lanie discovers she isn’t the only one grieving his sudden passing. A serial adulterer, he left behind several other women who, like Lanie, each believe she was his legally wedded wife.
Rocked by the infidelity, Lanie is left to grapple with searing questions. How could she be so wrong about a man she thought she knew better than anyone? Will she ever be able to trust another person? Can she even trust herself?
Desperate to make a fresh start, Lanie impulsively takes a job at the family-run Capriotti Winery. At first, she feels like an outsider among the boisterous Capriottis. With no real family of her own, she’s bewildered by how quickly they all take her under their wing and make her feel like she belongs. Especially Mark Capriotti, a gruffly handsome Air Force veteran turned deputy sheriff who manages to wind his way into Lanie’s cold, broken heart—along with the rest of the clan.
Everything is finally going well for her, but the arrival of River Brown changes all that. The fresh-faced twenty-one-year old seems as sweet as they come…until her dark secrets come to light—secrets that could destroy the new life Lanie’s only just begun to build.
Jill Shalvis’ books always put me in a happy place and when I was given the opportunity to participate in the Rainy Day Friends blog tour, I couldn’t pass up the chance! Rainy Day Friends is the second book in the Wildstone series, but is very much a standalone novel.
We have really great character development. Lanie Jacobs is a widow and is in search of getting away from it all. She’s tough and wants to protect herself which makes perfect sense since her husband turned out to be liar and a cheater. Lanie is also a bit shy, but a loyal friend. You’ll like her a lot! Then we have Mark Capriotti, Air Force veteran who is now the local police force. He’s fun and he also has his reasons for reserving his heart. I kept picturing David Harbour who plays Jim Hopper in Stranger Things as Mark. You will love Mark! We have a wide array of secondary characters that play a vital role including River Brown, a young pregnant woman. Your heart will go out to both Lanie and River and you’ll want to take them both into your arms and just give them a big tight hug. But I will warn you-the Capriotti family might wear you out, but you’ll love this crazy family.
If you’ve read a Jill Shalvis book before, you know she loves to include animals and Rainy Day Friends is no exception! Here we have Gracie and I loved her from the moment she appeared on the page. She’s just this big old fur ball who wants belly rubs and your attention. I want to know how Shalvis does it! The animals in her books often steal the show (and my heart) and you’ll love them even if you aren’t an animal lover.
What I really enjoyed about Rainy Day Friends was the writing and the laughs. Shalvis is gives us a believable story and characters that make us care about them. I wanted to visit the winery, to eat the Capriotti food, and be part of the family. I laughed and cried with them. And the romance-talk about swoon! It was slow and perfect; the reader gets to fall in love with Lanie and Mark alongside them. Overall, Rainy Day Friends was a perfect read and I didn’t want it to end! My walk had a bounce to it afterwards and it was all due to Shalvis and this wonderful story.
If you’re looking for a new author to try or looking to get lost in a romance, I highly recommend Jill Shalvis’ Rainy Day Friends. If you’ve never read a Jill Shalvis book, trust me; she’s going to become one of your favorite authors to read!
