The Essentials: Liz Carlyle

The Essentials: Liz Carlyle

Have you ever wanted to read an established author, but not sure where to start? Fear no more! The Essentials is a showcase spotlighting a specific author or series. The feature might even include non-bookish related items such as films or music. To kick off The Essentials, I’m spotlighting Liz Carlyle. Carlyle has written 21 full length novels and 3 novellas. She’s always on my auto buy list, but admit, I prefer classic Liz. By that I mean, I love her earlier novels which I consider to be essential to any historical romance fan! I’m always surprised when she’s not listed as an author to read when people ask for recommendations because I truly do consider her a gem. My False Heart /

One Liners: J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit

One Liners: J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit

One Liners is a weekly feature where we look at a novel’s first line as if it were a pick up line. We’ve all heard the saying, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” The first line in a book is equally important as the last since it sets the tone and often will either make an impression or not. Let’s face it, it’s a little like dating. Will that guy with the cheesy pick up line score a number or not? So, I began to think…if the first line in a book was a pick up line, would you give it your number, agree to a date, let it buy you a drink, or do you walk away? Today’s book is J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit…. Read more »

A. G. Howard Book Signing Wrap Up + Giveaway

A. G. Howard Book Signing Wrap Up + Giveaway

On Friday, February 7th, A. G. Howard was in town and there was a book signing. I wasn’t aware that the bookstore had a separate building for bookish events and was surprised at how dead it was. I browsed a bit and then Howard herself walked into the store and was told she was in the wrong location. So there she goes and I’m following her! Good thing it was in the same vicinity! On arrival I bought 4 copies: 2 of Splintered & 2 of Unhinged. The cashier mentioned she was a book blogger too, but I didn’t get a chance to get her blog name and exchange info. The highlight of the evening wasn’t only Howard, but meeting Danielle from Consuming Worlds! We’ve talked before and haven’t had… Read more »

Confessions of a Hogwarts Newbie: The Sorcerer’s Stone Part 2

Confessions of a Hogwarts Newbie: The Sorcerer’s Stone Part 2

As you several of you know, I’ve never read Harry Potter nor have I seen the films. I finished the second half to The Sorcerer’s Stone and I liked the pace a little better. What I really liked was seeing and experiencing Hogwarts at the same that Harry does. All the information he has to go on is based on what Ron tells him and of course Ron gets his info from his brothers. Hands down I loved the sorting hat scene! It was so much fun to read about. My next favorite has to be Christmas and I loved how Ron’s mother made a sweater for Harry! Most importantly I loved, loved, loved Harry receiving something that belonged to his father. Overall thoughts as I read: • Sorting hat… Read more »

2014 Book Blogger Love-a-thon Mini Challenge #3: Mad Lib

2014 Book Blogger Love-a-thon Mini Challenge #3: Mad Lib

Book Blogger Love-a-thon continues and this time with a mini challenge: mad libs! This was a fun challenge. One day, I was hiking with Shane. Out of the blue, a UFO came out of nowhere! It was so huge, golden and smelly. At first, we were afraid, we were petrified, but we ran. We hopped on the jeep to make our getaway. As we escaped, we turned up the radio because Dancing Queen came on and made me relax. Everything was extremely smooth sailing until a tiger appeared in the middle of the road. We swerved to avoid it, but while Shane stayed on the jeep, I got thrown onto my side in the woods. I couldn’t get up, and felt silly as I lay there staring up at the… Read more »

Book Blogger Love-a-Thon is a two day event hosted by Alexa from Alexa Loves Books and Kate from Tales of Books and Bands. The first mini challenge is book spine poetry and I had a difficult time working on mine. I kept changing book titles until I realized I wasn’t getting anything that resembled a poem! I’m still not sure if what I came up with make sense. The Queen’s Dwarf And the Girl on the Golden Coin A Little Folly Called Night Film Forever, Interrupted Forged in Dreams and Magick The Burning Sky Fallen The Marked Son The Secret Daughter of the Tsar The Winner’s Curse Of Such Wicked Intent Silent in the Grave Fifth Grave Past the Light Songs of Willow Frost The Heir Apparant And The Imposter… Read more »

Operation Bed Post: Gabriel Emerson

Operation Bed Post: Gabriel Emerson

I’ve decided to declassify a few files and introduce a bi-monthly feature at Lit, etc: Operation Bed Post! We’ve all come across that fictional character and walked away with our hearts forever imprinted with their name. This is a fun way to highlight the ones that have um earned a notch on my bedpost. 😉 Everyone knows I have way too many fictional boyfriends and I’ve decided to introduce them to you and yes share them too (grumbles). To kick off Operation Bed Post, I am declassifying the first dossier and it’s none other than Professor Emerson! The Professor Name: Gabriel Owen Emerson Research interest: Dante University: The University of Toronto Department: Italian Studies Introduced by: Sylvain Reynard Gabriel Emerson for me is an obvious choice because he’s distinctive. He’s… Read more »

Confessions of a Hogwarts Newbie: The Sorcerer’s Stone Part 1

Confessions of a Hogwarts Newbie: The Sorcerer’s Stone Part 1

As several of you know, I’ve never read Harry Potter! I started The Sorcerer’s Stone last week and I’m halfway through it (well I stopped right where Harry and company are about to get sorted or something like that. LOL). What do I think so far? The Sorcerer’s Stone really is for children and you can definitely tell just by the first few opening pages. Still I’ve enjoyed what I read and keep wondering how in the world J. K. Rowling slept! I mean with all these characters and world building, I doubt I’d sleep very much. Overall thoughts as I read: • Why do the Dursley’s hate the Potter’s? • Okay…we have a cat and now there’s a Professor McGonagall. Who the heck is Dumbledore talking to and what… Read more »

Confessions of a Hogwarts Newbie

Confessions of a Hogwarts Newbie

Okay…it’s time for a bookish related confession. If you’ve followed the blog then this won’t come as a surprise, but then maybe it will. Are you ready? * * * When people ask me my thoughts about Harry Potter I always say I have nothing to say. Why? Because I’ve never read the books and haven’t seen the films. When I started to blog, I decided that needed to change. I know as a book blogger you can’t read every book out there (not ever reading Twilight), but it just seems that this is one series I needed to tackle. What I do know: • Harry lives with his aunt and uncle • Hogwarts is the school where Harry ends up going • Sorting hats (the term is all I… Read more »
